Maheshwar is believed to be built on the site of the ancient city of Somvanshya Shastrarjun Kshatriya, and was the capital of king Kartavirya Arjuna, (Shree Shastrarjun) who is mentioned in the Sanskrit epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. According to a popular legend, one day the King Sahasrarjun and his 500 wives went to the river for a picnic. When the wives wanted a vast play area, the King stopped the mighty river Narmada with his 1000 arms. While they were all enjoying themselves, Ravana flew by in his Pushpak Vimana. Downstream, when he saw the dry river bed, he thought it was an ideal place to pray to Lord Shiva. He made a shivalinga out of sand and began to pray. When Sahasrajuna's wives were done playing and they stepped out of the river bed, he let the waters flow. The voluminous river flowed down sweeping Ravana's shivalinga along, messing up his prayers. Furious, Ravana tracked Sahasrajuna and challenged him. Armed to the hilt the mighty Ravana was in for a huge surprise. The mighty Sahasrarjuna with the 1000 arms pinned Ravana to the ground. Then he placed 10 lamps on his heads and one on his hand. After tying up Ravana, Sahastrarjuna dragged him home and tied him up to the cradle pole of his son. A humiliated Ravana stayed prisoner until his release was secured. Jamadagni rishi, Renuka Devi and Lord Parashurama with whom Kartavirya Arjuna's story is closely associated also lived nearby. In Mahabharata, there is a narration of an unusual tradition where in marriage as a civil institution was not universal in Mahishmati unlike in rest of Aryavarta, which is also narrated in the Telugu-language Andhra Mahabharata in 'Sabha parva'. As per the legend, there was a nishada king named Nila who ruled over Mahishmati. King Nila had a daughter who was exceedingly beautiful. So much so that Agni, the (lord of fire) fell in love with her which was reciprocated. The princess always used to stay near the sacred fire of her father, causing it to blaze up with vigour. And king Nila's sacred fire, even if fanned, would not blaze until agitated by the gentle breath of her lips. Agni, assuming the form of a Brahman starts courting with the princess for long. But, one day the couple was discovered by the king, who became furious. Nila thereupon ordered the Brahman to be punished according to law. At this the illustrious deity flamed up in wrath and beholding the terrible flame, the king felt terrified and bent his head low on the ground. King hails Lord Agni and says he cannot punish a god who is responsible for the origin of Vedas, source of all Knowledge and Dharma. Pacified Agni then grants a boon to Nishada, and the King requests for the protection of his kingdom from any invasions. Agni swears to protect his kingdom on the condition that the king should sanctify pleasure out of pure love a legitimate action in his kingdom. Liberated from the orthodoxy of marriage as a prelude, women of Mahishmati enjoyed freedom that was then unheard off elsewhere in aryavarta. Years later, after the epic war the victorious Yudhishthira plans on conducting an Yagna by winning over everyone else on Earth. Sahadeva, the youngest of Pandavas knowing that Lord Agni was protecting the Nishada kingdom, prays to Lord Agni successfully and there upon moves to Saurashtra kingdom.

Maheshwar is a holy destination but in addition to it one can have many other activities to do like boating, enjoying heritage buildings like fort, palace, cenotaphs, and ghats. There are about 28 ghats in Maheshwar out of which important ones are Ahilya-ghat, Mahila-ghat, Peshwa-ghat and Phanse-ghat. Out of number of important and small temples, ghats, cenotaphs, here we have tried to cover some of the important ones for convenience of tourists:
Maheshwar Fort: It is a 16th century fort and is famous for its elegant architecture & spectacular view from Narmada River. It is located on the bank of river from where one can enjoy best view of river, boating, sunrise and sunset. This place was constructed by a greatest queen Ahalya Bai Holkar and was her residential place, a queen India ever had seen.
Ek Mukhi Dutta Temple: It is also called Shiva Datta Dham and one of the newly constructed temples in Sahastradhara, Jalkote at Maheshwar. It is spread over an area of 30 acres where as temple area is 10000 sq. feet.
Sahastrarjun Temple: It is also called Sri Somavamsha Sahasrarjuna temple. Original temple was built in 2nd century but was demolished in Muslim attacks. Later it was rebuilt in 13 century. Sometimes it is also referred as Sah-bahu temple.
Rajrajeshwari Temple: It is a lord Shiva temple, one among many temples in Maheshwar. It is a temple of eleven akhand jyoti deepak (eternal flame lamp) and known for nice architecture and sculpture work on structure. Temple is close to Ahilyeshwara temple.
Baneshwar Mahadev Temple: It is a small temple on island at Narmada River. In middle of river it can be visited through boat-ride. It is believed that a heavenly line from North-star passes through this temple to the center of Earth. This single-celled shrine, rising atop on a rock was built by Anand Raj Parmar in 5th century.
Royal Ghats: To fulfill the un-impressive look of Ahilyabai Holkar's cenotaph, her daughter-in-law Krishnabai gave special interest in building these impressive royal ghats. In most of the Maheshwar images, you will find pictures of these ghats from where tourists usually do boatride in Narmada River.
Ahilya Mata's Cenotaph: Main building of cenotaph is simple but its surrounding is even more beautiful and shows better sculpture work as it was developed later by her daughter-in-law. She commissioned two artisans brothers Bhujdar adn Gajdar to redesigh and construct both the retaining wall and the new cenotaph. In court there is cenotaph of Vithoji Rao also which was Holkar prince. In middle of the court it was Islamic looking domed structure. One of the gates of this court opens towards river Narmada.
Jwaleshwar Temple: Adjacent to Narmada River, Jaleshwar temple is located on a hill-top. It is about 3 km away from Ahilya ghat and can be reached by walk adjacent to river.
Kaleshwar Mahadev Temple: It is temple at confluence of Maheshwar River which joins Narmada River at this point. This temple is dedicated to lord Shiva. One needs to cross the river to reach this temple. It is located in deserted area so can be termed as fortified temple where tourists rarely visit.
Bajirao Peshwa Samadhi: It is approx. 60kms south-east of Maheshwar, in Raver Khurd. It is connected by road and not much popular among local people as they are unaware of the great personality of Bajirao Peshwa. He is considered as Napoleon of India due to his 100% winning record in all the wars, he fought. He was popular Maratha Military General. He died, due to heat-stroke, in year 28/April/1740 while moving towards Delhi with army of 100000 soldiers. Here we can also visit to Mahadev Temple & Rameshwara Temple, built by Kashi Bai (wife of Bajirao Peshwa). This site in on the bank of Narmada river which makes this place scenic and photogenic.
