Mandu is a ruined city and tourist destination in Malwa plateau at 100kms West of Indore city. It lies in 2079 feet high of Vindhya plateau at at distance of 35kms from Dhar city. In history of India, it is referred by the name of Mandavgarh & Shadiabaad. It is a celebration in stone of life and joy called ‘the city of joy’. Earlier Parmar Rajpoot ruled here and later it was slipped in hands of muslim rule, between 1401 and 1561 AD. it was the capital of a Muslim state in India. This was the period when Mughal conquered Delhi and Afgan Dilawar Khan established his kingdom in Malwa. During this Ghauri dynasty, Mandu was at peak of its glory & prosperity. It was golden era of Shadiabaad. But now a days, Mandu is mainly associated with the tribute to the love shared between the poet prince Baz Bahadur and his beautiful consort Rani Rupmati. The balladeers of malwa continued to sing of the royal romance, According to legand Rani Rupmati’s lyrical voice can still be heard across the Narmada.

The great Mughal emperor Jahangir wrote about Mandu’s Natural beauty & greatness that – “ I have never known about any other existing place on earth like Mandu before, which can be so exciting in terms of its adorable climate conditions and that too in rainy seasons.”While Lord Curzon said to get inspired of its incredible-ness that – “The way Mandu has inspired me from the bottom of my heart, regarding its architectural richness & matured nature, no of any Monuments in entire India did have same thing.”

Mandu history says that it was fortified city in 6th century BC and was known by the names Mandava Garh and Mandapa Durga. Mandu history is not well recorded till 9th century so available information is less. In that period it was frontier outpost of Gurjara-Pratihara empire of Kannauj. From 10th century onwards, it came into light and we have better available history information. Parmar kings ruled in 10th & 11th century. Later Raja Bhoj ruled till end of 13th century. Till this time Mandu was flourishing with many Hindu & Jain temples in fortified region and surrounding areas. After Raja Bhoj, Sultan Khilji conquered the region and thus Hindu rule ends with demolishment of many Hindu & Jain temples in region. In later years, Malwa region witnessed rules by many different dynasties including Mughals. But popular Mandu history revolves around love story of King Baz Bahadur and Queen Roopmati. They both are of artistic nature. Baz Bahadur was good poet and fond of art and poetry where as Roopmati was a good singer. Baz Bahadur fell in love of Roopmati who was Hindu by religion. They get married by both religious rites. During this time, Mandu was at its peak. But on knowing about the beauty and singing talent of Roopmati, mighty Akbar send his army to conquer Mandu. He did so conveniently but when his men reach Roopmati's palace, foreseeing the humiliation by Mughals, she opted to commit suicide by consuming poison and thus their love story ends. Baz Bahadur was captured and spend rest of the life in service on Akbar at Agra.
